This map depicts the Strahler stream order classification system across the State of Alaska. Strahler stream order is a river classification system that assigns a hierarchical number to a given reach of a waterway based on its branching network of tributaries. The assigned Strahler stream order number corresponds to the amount and Strahler numbers of upstream tributaries that contribute to a given portion of the waterway. In this way Strahler stream order numbers assist in classifying and understanding characteristics along the course of a watershed. This dataset was created using the 2018 National Hydrography Dataset and RivEX version 1.14 within ArcGIS Pro. Where appropriate the Canada1Water hydrologic model was used to classify transboundary watercourses. Areas of that have been determined to be pre-statehood land withdrawals are excluded from the current version of this dataset.
